Ahaziah, son of Jehoram

Scripture records a short and disastrous reign for this young king. Influenced by his mother Athaliah, he walked in the ways of the house of Ahab. Allied with Jehoram, king of Israel, he warred against Hazael, king of Damascus. Wounded in battle by the Syrians, Jehoram, king of Israel, returned to Jezreel to be healed and Ahaziah visited him there.

Divine judgement came upon both kings at the hand of Jehu, a captain of the host of Israel. Anointed as the new king of Israel by one of the sons of the prophets at the command of Elisha, Jehu drove a chariot force hard to Jezreel and slew Jehoram with an arrow through the heart. Observing this, Ahaziah escaped by way of the garden house but was fatally wounded at the Gur pass near Ibleam. He died upon reaching Megiddo, and thus both the kings of Israel and Judah died on the selfsame day (2Ki 9:21-28).
